Museum of Modern Arts / Museu de Arte Moderna
This museum exhibits some amazing artistic collections of both local and international artists. You can get to see some brilliant sculptures and paintings of well known Brazilian artists such as Bruno Giorgi, Maria Martins and Di Cavalcanti.

Planetarium of Rio de Janeiro / Fundação Planetário
This Planetarium is devoted to spreading knowledge about astronomical studies which includes the universe, moons, sun, stars, galaxies and planets. All this information can be gathered by visiting the different areas categorized under names like, A Terra E Seus Movimentos – Espaço E Tempo, Astronomia Estelar, Nave-Escola. This museum is a perfect place for curious children.

Museo Amsterdam Sauer

This museum exhibits a remarkable collection of valuable stones as well as a couple of life size models of mines. The museum is located next door to the Museu H Stern which is another interesting museum to visit in the neighbourhood of Ipanema in Rio.

National History Museum / Museu Histórico Nacional
The National History Museum is one of the most important museums in Brazil. Spread over an area of 50,000 sq.ft, the museum puts of display over 257,000 pieces of work. Among them the important ones are 18th century constructions: House of Armaments and House of Train. All along the year, a number of exhibitions and video gatherings are arranged for students and teachers to make them understand Brazil’s social, political and economic history.

Museu H Stern

Located in Ipanema next door to the Museu Amsterdam Saucer, this museum holds a permanent exhibition of Jewellery by the famous Jeweller H Stern. The museum also features the procedure of converting rough stones into impressive jewels by specialists such as craftsmen and goldsmiths.

National Fine Arts Museum (Museu Nacional de Belas Artes)
The National Fine Arts Museum exhibits over 200 works of Brazilian artists dating back to the 17th to 19th century. Works of International artists like Picasso and Matisse are also displayed here in a different gallery. The collection in the museum includes folk art, African art, images, paintings, medals, sculptures, furniture and other artistic works. One of the most famous galleries featured here is the Galeria de Arte Brasileira filled with 20th century classics.

Museu Histórico da Cidade

Situated in the neighbourgood of Gávea in Rio, this museum exhibits a permanent display of artifacts dating back from the 1600’s to the 20th Century. Museu Histórico da Cidade features furniture, paintings, photographs all representing Rio at certain times. The museum, known in English as the City History Museum, is housed in a 19th century building and located in the Parque da Cidade .

Museu do Acude
Museu do Acude is located in the Tijuca Forest and is dedicated to celebrate the cultural heritage of Brazli. Initiated by Castro Mayo in the early 20th century, the architecture and layout of the museum is typically Portuguese. Collections in the museum include copies of rare sculpture namely Chinese, Indian, Indochinese and porcelain of different origins. Brazilian furniture, silver wares, French crystals, Portuguese earthenwares, are also exhibited here.

Museu Forte De Copacabana

This museum is located inside the building which was the fort that acted as Rio’s premier defences against attack. The fort has been preserved well with most of its original features still in tact. The museum itself exhibits collections of artifacts dating back from the start of the Portuguese colony to the 19th Century.

Museu do Indio
Started by Darcy Ribeiro, Museu do Indio is the only museum that showcases displays dedicated to various cultures around the world. It is the only official institution that protects various traditions and cultural diversity of 270 groups that formed the enriching heritage of Brazil. There are thousands of ethnographic, local and foreign publications, and other artifacts on display.

Museu Casa De Rui Barbosa

This museum, located in the neighbourhood of Botafogo in Rio, used to be the home of the famous Brazilian diplomat and journalist, Rui Barbosa. He was also responsible for forming Rio de Janeiro’s socio-economic development at that start of the 20th Century. The museum today features a permanent exhibition of Rui Barbosa’s personal possessions and also houses his library featuring some very interesting books and documents.

Museu Internacional de Arte Naif
Museu Internacional de Arte Naif (MAIN) houses collections related to local art and has over 5000 works of artists from all over Brazil dating from 15th century till today. Both temporary and permanent exhibitions of local and international artists are arranged here. The museum also includes a café named Café MIAN.

Museu de Ciência da Terra

This fabulous children’s museum is situated in the neighbourhood of Urca in Rio. It is an Earth Science museum with dinosaur replicas on display. It portrays the natural history of Brazil since the very beginning and exhibits various items such as rocks and meteorites. Overall it is a very useful museum for children with impressive statues and artifacts.

Republic Museum / Museu de Republica
The Castle Palace which was the seat of Brazilian government from 1897 to 1960 and has witnessed some important political and historical events today houses the ‘Museu de Republica’. This recently restored building was home to the president of Brazil, Getulio Vargas. The president committed suicide in this very building because of the bad press he received. The museum features an exhibition of various art and Republican items. Additionally it houses a book shop and a cinema portraying pieces from famous artists. It was the first computerized museum in Latin America which offered multimedia kiosks, reference centres for over 20,000 books, 7,000 items and 80,000 documents defining Brazil’s history.
